Stars president says team working on deal with Lindy Ruff for head coach

Wednesday marked the 14-year anniversary of Brett Hull's infamous Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Dallas Stars as they beat the Buffalo Sabres in six games. According to Stars president Jim Lites, the man behind the Sabres' bench that day, Lindy Ruff, is lining up to be on the other side after four months of unemployment.

According to Travis Brown of the Star Telegram, Stars president Jim Lites said at a Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the 53-year old Ruff is close to becoming their next head coach.

“We respect Lindy a lot. I think he would be a great fit for us. I don't think the deal is done, but it would be a good thing for the Dallas Stars if he is hired,” Lites added. “I don't think there is anything standing in the way of it other than getting Jim and Lindy together on money."

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday that Ruff was expected to be in town for a second interview with general manager Jim Nill. Given Lites' comments, that interview could just be the two sides hammering out final details of a contract. Heika confirmed with Lites that a deal isn't done just yet.
