Remember how you’d be at Disney World and you’re hugging Goofy because Goofy is your favorite? Well, guess what: There’s some poor sap in there sweating profusely in the Florida sun under that Goofy mask so you can take a blurry photo. And there’s someone who had to put the mask on, and then someone to clean the room where Goofy got dressed. And that $10 water you’re drinking? Yeah, someone broke their back lugging that case over to the stand near the tea cup ride, too.
Point is, a lot of behind the scenes work goes into making the magic happen. That’s why we love this time lapse from the Detroit News in which Joe Louis Arena is transformed from an auto show into an ice rink in 48 hours. Watch … it’s incredible:
Over a two-day period, photographer David Guralnick created a time-lapse video - edited down to roughly 3,800 separate frames — that shows Joe Louis Arena being transformed from an auto show venue to an ice rink; a 48-hour job reduced to 2 minutes and 12 seconds.
The transformation took place from 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15 to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 17, according to Guralnick, who first had to receive permission from the Red Wings before going to work.
"I hung the camera up in the catwalks above the arena, looking for an angle that would show the entire rink when they were finished," Guralnick said. "I'd say I was about 10 feet away from the roof, so I'd say I was way up there."
Whether it’s building a backyard rink or destroying the Igloo, we’re huge fans of the time lapsing of hockey stuff. In fact, we eagerly await the day when someone does a time lapse of Hal Gill skating from the icing line all the way to the offensive blue line. Get on it, Nashville.
