Nicklas Danielsson, 28, is winger playing for HC Lev Praha of the KHL and a 2003 fifth-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks. He’s also from Sweden, which might be why he bristled at the comparison between his awesome lacrosse-style (and floorball style) goal against Vityaz on Wednesday and that of Mikael Granlund, the Finnish star who went upstairs against Russia in the 2011 world championships.
"I have seen many players do it, he was not the first one to do that,” said Danielsson. Sweden, represent!
Danielsson’s the latest to pull off this stuff of goalie nightmares; check it out:
“I thought about it, I got the puck and nobody from [Vityaz defended] me, so I tried it. Why not?" he told Tyden.cz after the game.
"You have to make sure you have good puck on the blade, and then watch how the goaltender reacts. He has no idea where the puck is at the moment. It's a lot of luck, but you have to just try.”
His goal broke a 1-1 tie in the third period; Lev went on to win 5-2. (There was a bit of the old Vityaz Chekov in this game, as Trevor Gillies was given a major and a game misconduct for spearing in the first period.)
Danielsson, by the way, dedicated his goal to his newborn son. And what father doesn't want to give the gift of sneaky hockey goals to his child?
