NHL Three Stars: Sharks double up Oilers; Brodeur blanks Flyers

No. 1 Star: Logan Couture/Patrick Marleau, San Jose Sharks

The Sharks did all of their scoring in the first period and that's all they needed as they spoiled the home opener for the Edmonton Oilers with a 6-3 win. San Jose scored six times in the opening frame, with Couture and Marleau each netting two and recording an assist. Joe Thornton added three helpers. The first period outburst tied a Sharks franchise record for goals in a period.

No. 2 Star: Michael Ryder, Dallas Stars

Ryder provided all of the scoring for Dallas popping one in early in the first period and one early in the third period as the Stars slipped by the Detroit Red Wings 2-1. Cody Eakin chipped in two assists, while Kari Lehtonen made 39 saves.

No. 3 Star: Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils

The 40-year old Brodeur made 24 saves for his 120th career NHL shutout as the Devils blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. Travis Zajac and David Clarkson scored first period goals, while Ilya Kovalchuk put the game out of reach with a shorthanded penalty shot in the third period:

Honorable Mention: First NHL goals tonight for Damian Brunner, Justin Schultz, Nail Yakupov, and Alex Galchenyuk ... Reilly Smith dangles around the Detroit defense, but is denied by a great glove save from Jimmy Howard:

Evander Kane and Blake Wheeler each scored a goal and recorded an assist as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Washington Capitals 4-2. Tobi Enstrom recorded three assists of his own. Mike Green played in his 400th NHL game ... Goals from Tom Pyatt and Cory Conacher in the first period helped lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Conacher now has 5 points in his first 3 games. Pyatt opened the scoring 5:18 into the game thanks to a perfect redirection of a beautiful Vincent Lecavalier pass:

Martin Erat took advantage of a Niklas Backstrom turnover midway through the third period help put the Nashville Predators past the Minnesota Wild 3-1. Nick Spaling had a goal and an assist, while Chris Mason stopped 29 shots ... Down 1-0 in the third period, Gabriel Landeskog, David Jones and P.A. Parenteau each scored within the first 8:16 to power the Colorado Avalanche over the still winless Los Angeles Kings 3-1 ... Andrei Markov scored his first two goals since Nov. 9, 2010 and Carey Price made 27 stops as the Montreal Canadiens downed the Florida Panthers 4-1 ... Behind 32 saves from Corey Crawford, the Chicago Blackhawks edged the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Alex Steen played in his 500th NHL game. Patrick Kane opened the scoring after capitalizing on a 3-on-0:

Did You Know? The Capitals lost their first home opener since 2000 and have started 0-2 for the first time since 1996. (AP)

Dishonorable Mention: Mike Riberio was not a fan of the officiating after a missed high stick that ended with him needing stitches: "They believe they're like above us or like more power, they feel power, I don't know." ... The Flyers also started the lockout-shortened 1995 season 0-3 ... Detroit's power play went 0-for-4 against Dallas and is 0-for-15 for the season.
