NHL Three Stars: Marian Gaborik, Steve Sullivan get tricky

No. 1 Star: Marian Gaborik, New York Rangers

The star winger led the Rangers to their first win of the season, scoring twice in a 2:13 span in the first period and then winning the game in overtime with this electrifying goal after a Boston Bruins turnover. Gaborik’s goal gave the Rangers a 4-3 victory; look at those hands on the finish:

No. 2 Star: Steve Sullivan, Phoenix Coyotes

Sullivan scored at even strength in the first, and then had a power-play and an even strength goal in the third for his eighth career hat trick, leading the Coyotes to a 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. His last one? In Dec. 2009, against these very same Blue Jackets.

No. 3 Star: Zack Kassian, Vancouver Canucks

Kassian scored his second of the season to open the scoring, and then closed the scoring for the Canucks by deking Miikka Kiprusoff out of his jock in the shootout. The Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames, 3-2.

Honorable Mention: James van Riemsdyk scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Nikolai Kulemin had three assists. Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur scored their first of the season for the Leafs. … James Reimer made 28 saves in the win. … Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored their first for the Penguins. … Nathan Horton scored his first for the Bruins. … Patrice Bergeron was 12-for-15 on faceoffs. … Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored two goals for the Coyotes. … Jason LaBarbera relieved an injured Mike Smith and stopped 21 of 22 shots. … Alex Tanguay scored his second for the Flames.

Did You Know? Pam Anderson was at the Canucks game. Again.

Dishonorable Mention: Malkin was given a game misconduct at the end of regulation, while Crosby was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with 1:51 left in the game. … The Blue Jackets allowed 42 shots on Steve Mason. … The Leafs lost Joffrey Lupul to a fractured forearm.
