Brynäs IF is a storied franchise in Sweden's Elitserien, home to players such as Toronto Maple Leafs locked-out defenseman Cody Franson and Christian Djoos, son of the incomparably named Par Djoos, who unfortunately didn't go Gwyneth and name his son Apple.
This year marked the 100th birthday for Brynäs, and the franchise celebrated the moment with Canadiens-esque hyperbolic grandeur: An outdoor game in front of 15,000 fans at Glaveboken Arena vs. Timrå IK, in minus-12 degrees weather — so cold that the players' water bottles kept freezing during the match.
It also featured a spectacular opening with fireworks.
Like, all the fireworks.
Wow.
DUDE DEEP PURPLE'S "HIGHWAY STAR" *IS* HOCKEY…
After that rather low-key opening, Brynäs celebrated its anniversary with a 3-0 win.
Your move, whenever-the-hell-we're-getting-another-NHL Winter Classic …
