The holiday season is a time for giving. Thus it was that Stephane Da Costa of the AHL Binghamton Senators was given a fortuitous bounce of the puck on Friday night against the Rochester Americans.
Alas, Amerks goalie David Leggio was not in the holiday spirit and Grinch’d him, resulting a save of the year candidate:
Here’s how Donald Rieber, Jr. of the Examiner saw it:
Stephane Da Costa looked to give Binghamton a two-goal lead when he caught Leggio out of position and had a wide open net to shoot at. He was a fraction of a second late and that was just enough time for Leggio to come diving across the crease and make the save, with 13:01 left in regulation.
The save might have been tougher than it looked: Did Rochester defenseman Joe Finley get his stick on that puck on the way to Leggio’s glove? Hey, maybe it helped him make the stop; which would have been nice, considering the Amerks’ defense made contact with Leggio, making his dive across the crease all the more difficult.
Leggio and Rochester won the game, 6-5, in a shootout.
Quite a turnaround from the last time we featured Leggio on Puck Daddy, in which he threw a tantrum on the bench that included the goalie slamming his own head against the glass partition. Quite the turnaround, indeed.
