When the hockey world descended on Pittsburgh for the 2012 NHL Draft in June, all that remained of the Civic Arena was a big pile of dirt.
In September, construction crews began taking apart the former home of the Penguins as the shiny new confines of CONSOL Energy Center watched from across the street. YouTube user "DayGraphics2012" set up a camera and created this time-lapse video of the "disappearing Civic Arena" over a 9-month span from September to late-June:
So what will become of the land that the "House that Mario Built" once stood on? For starters, a parking lot, but also down the road possibly an entertainment complex similar to what their pals in Philadelphia now have.
From the Post-Gazette:
Penguins officials said Wednesday they have spoken with the creators of Xfinity Live! Philadelphia, a 60,000-square-foot, sports-themed entertainment complex, in search of ideas they could weave into the retail and restaurant component of the 28-acre development site near Consol Energy Center in the Lower Hill District where the Civic Arena once stood.
There was some hope that a new practice rink might be part of the land development, but the Penguins announced last week that a facility will be built in Cranberry.
