No Shea Weber, no problem says Flyers GM Holmgren

The Philadelphia Flyers took a chance. They tried to grab one of the NHL's best defenseman with a contract structured so that the smaller market Nashville Predators would think twice about matching it.

It didn't work.

So GM Paul Holmgren moves on with his summer and turns his attention to re-signing restricted free agent Jakub Voracek. On a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Holmgren said he sees Voracek on Claude Giroux's wing next season and that re-signing him is "only a matter of time."

By going after Weber with a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet, Holmgren said it wasn't a statement on the Flyers' defense, instead it was an opportunity to add a world-class player to the roster.

Holmgren stressed several times that he likes the youth on the Flyers at the moment, which is why names like Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn, two main targets of teams wishing to make deals with Philadelphia, are staying put unless he's blown away by an offer.

"What we are trying to do is add to it without trying to take anything away," Holmgren said. "Anything we have done this summer has been just that. A caveat to that is we will look and see what we can do to make our team better, but our mind set is 'We like our team.' So, we are not looking to make big changes, we are looking to add without subtracting. We will see what we can do."

As far as Shane Doan, who visited the Flyers over the weekend, Holmgren said they have interest if the 35-year old Phoenix Coyotes captain is ready to move on, but the feeling is still that he'll wait the Greg Jamison situation out.

Now that Weber is signed and Rick Nash has finally been dealt, it's only a matter of time before the Bobby Ryan-to-Philly rumors heat up again. The Flyers still have cap room, according to CapGeek, and, as we have seen already, are in on every big name free agent and player on the trade market. Holmgren couldn't speak directly about Ryan because of tampering issues, but you know there'd be interest in bringing a local kid like Ryan to town.

"We are trying to add to our team without subtracting if at all possible, make it better yet," said Holmgren. "We will see what the rest of the summer brings."
