It's been almost a month since a report out of Finland stated that Anaheim Ducks star Teemu Selanne would put off retirement another year and return for the 2012-13 season.
This afternoon the Ducks confirmed that the 42-year old Selanne would be back after inking a 1-year extension. The deal is worth $4.5 million, according to Lisa Dillman of the LA Times, which is the going rate for hockey players older than 40 this summer.
From the Ducks:
"While I'm still amazed by his speed and skill level, it's Teemu's love for the game and his teammates that make him so special," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. "Anaheim is where he belongs."
...
"I still feel I can play at a high level," said Selanne. "As I always say, this is my happy place and I can't wait to get back on the ice in front of our great fans."
What was the biggest factor in the Finnish Flash returning? Apparently, office paperwork:
It hasn't been reported whether or not this would be a farewell tour season for Selanne, but given his 66 points last season, let's hope he continues a string of 1-year extensions to allow us to watch him continue playing and hope for one last "shoot the glove" goal celebration.
