LA Kings reward Jonathan Quick with 10-year, $58 million extension

As Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick finished the next to last year on his current deal, he capped it off with a Vezina Trophy nomination, Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy. He was a very big reason in the Kings turning around their season and the team has invested heavily in their franchise goaltender.

On Thursday afternoon the Kings announced that Quick had agreed to a 10-year extension. The total value is worth $58 million, per RDS' Renaud Lavoie. The deal kicks in at the start of the 2013-14 season.

From Kings GM Dean Lombardi:

"We are very happy to have a long-term agreement in place with one of our top young players. At this point we prefer to comment more on or around July 1."

Under CBA rules Quick cannot sign the contract until Sunday, the opening of the free agency period.

Quick becomes the third goaltender to be signed to a 10-plus year deal joining Rick DiPietro (15) and Roberto Luongo (12). Along with Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, he's also the third King with a deal with a 10-plus year term.

So what becomes of Jonathan Bernier? For years his name has been mentioned as a trade chip for Lombardi. He'll become a restricted free agent after next season and with the writing now on the wall in Los Angeles, it's only a matter of time before Bernier is wearing another uniform. How soon that happens is a question for Lombardi.

Now that they've had a break from winning the Cup and locked up Quick for the next decade, the Kings' Twitter account was back on duty trolling the other 29 fanbases:
